to knuckle under
Уступить, покориться кому-либо. В настоящее время мы используем слово knuckle только в значении «сустав пальца», а раньше это слово имело более широкое значение и обозначало любую кость, которая заканчивалась суставом. В этом контексте глагол to knuckle under означает преклонить колена в знак уступки или поражения. Некоторые думают, что происхождение этого выражения относится к обычаю ударять стол снизу костяшками пальцев при поражении в споре.

He had to knuckle under, because the boss threatened to fire him. — Он вынужден был уступить, потому что начальник грозился его уволить.
